Bergamo is a picturesque city in Lombardy, northeast of Milan. The oldest part of the city, known as Città Alta is characterized by paved roads and houses the city’s cathedral. It is surrounded by 16th century Venetian walls (recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and is accessible by funicular.

 

In the heart of Città Alta sits the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the imposing Cappella Colleoni, which boasts eighteenth-century frescoes by Tiepolo.

 

Thanks to its proximity to the international airport Orio al Serio, Bergamo can be reached by all major European cities in less than two hours.
